All instruction takes place in a small group format.

Each class runs for 90 minutes.

Class sizes are kept to six students or less.

This is done in order to better address the individualized needs of each child.

Each week YOUR CHILD is given a special take home FUN packet with hands-on activities and games to reinforce the concepts and lessons learned.

Each week YOU are given a note that explains what we did in class, along with tips and suggestions for fun at home activities that you can do with your child to help them build a strong foundation for learning!

Understandably, parents can be at a loss as to how to assist their child with reading or math skills.  At Learning Trek we are committed to giving you the information and tools necessary to help your child discover a love of Math and Reading.  Of course- all of this is done through PLAY!  A few extra minutes at home- while driving in the car- these are great times to play some fun and enriching games with your child.  Let us show you how!

All Learning Trek Academy Reading instruction is based not only on the Developmentally Appropriate Practices as researched and outlined by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), but also on the Best Practices as outlined by the International Reading Association (IRA).

Learning Trek Academy is a private, educational enrichment program created and taught by Denise Tenyer, a State of Illinois certified educator, who has more than 20 years experience teaching young children.

Alphabet Adventure- Level 1

This class is designed for the young child who is showing an interest in the alphabet and books.  Perhaps you have witnessed your child picking up books and "reading" the story all by themselves!  This means that they have started to make the connection that those letters on the page somehow come together to "mean" something- like their favorite story! It is exactly that curiosity and excitement that Alphabet Adventure will build from.

This class will focus on reading readiness skills that your child will need to take the next step into reading- skills such as distinguishing upper and lowercase letters, auditory and visual discrimination, sequencing, and story order.  All these skills will be presented in FUN ways, through songs, games, and stories.

Equally important is nurturing your child's oral language through class discussions and use of authentic literature.  The small group size enables each child to be an active part in this process.  Successful completion of this level prepares your child for level 2 in this program- Sounds Safari.

Sounds Safari- Level 2

The Sounds Safari curriculum is for those young children who are already familiar with all of the letters of the alphabet.  Children enrolling in this class should be able to identify all upper and lowercase letters in the alphabet.

In this program we will begin to explore letter/sound relationships.  There will be an emphasis on beginning and ending consonant sounds in words.  Instruction will also include auditory discrimination skills, blending, word awareness, and phoneme manipulation.
Your child's oral language skills will be strengthened as they are encouraged to share and discuss ideas and stories that they create.  Through a progression of simple word lists, short stories, and the use of authentic literature, your child will learn phonemic sounds and begin their reading adventure!

Word Wrangler- Level 3

The Word Wrangler program is the next step in your child’s early adventures into reading. This class builds upon the phonemic skills acquired in Sounds Safari and teaches higher level phonological activities such as blending and segmenting syllables and phonemes.

Research has found that these skills are related closely to successful early reading and writing development.

Children enrolling in this class should be able to identify the majority of letter names with the letter sounds that they produce. Completion of the Sounds Safari class is highly recommended.

Rime Rustlers- Level 4

Rime Rustlers is the newest addition to our Learning Trek reading family.  This class is yet another step in the acquisition of reading skills by introducing your child to the phonemic principle of Onset/Rime.

The Onset is the part of the syllable before the vowel - the Rime is the remainder of the syllable, from the vowel onwards. Children learn to identify groups of letters which (bigger than simple vowels) which create predictable sounds. Where the same vowels can give different sounds in different words, the Rime helps them quickly work out the specific sound - by referring to the letters after the vowel.

Children enrolling in this class should be easily able to identify all letters and corresponding sounds. They should also be in the beginning stages of being able to sound out simple Consonant-Vowel-Consonant (CVC) words.   Completion of the Word Wranglers class is highly recommended.

Blending Buckaroos- Level 5

Blending Buckaroos is the fourth level in the Reading Readiness Round-up program.   This curriculum emphasizes long and short vowel sounds, introduction into identifying blends and digraphs and also sight word recognition.  In addition to the phonemic emphasis, this class also covers beginning grammar skills along with story comprehension and emergent writing skills.  Completion of the Word Wranglers class is recommended for admission into this level program.

Reading Rangers- Level 6

Reading Rangers is the fifth and final level in our Reading Readiness Round-Up program.  This program is for children who are considered emergent and beginning readers.  Children at this level should demonstrate skill at sounding out simple consonant-vowel-consonant words and have some sight word recognition skills.  The curriculum focuses on word families and a further study of blends and digraphs. Continuing on with what was learned in level 4 of Blending Buckaroos, we introduce more in depth skills like synonyms, antonyms, homophones and compound words.  We also introduce nouns and verbs.

Kindergarten Reading Enrichment- Level 7

Our Kindergarten Reading Enrichment classes are available for Kindergarten age children. These classes serve to compliment and enrich the Jolly Phonics instruction that children are receiving in their Kindergarten programs.

These enrichment classes offer small group sessions for Kindergarten age children who could benefit from reinforcement and additional instruction in the literacy and reading skills they are learning in school.

All classes are designed to suit your child's individual needs- and program curriculums have been created to suit your child's unique learning needs.

This program is for Kindergarten age children who are considered emergent and beginning readers.  Children at this level should demonstrate skill at sounding out simple consonant-vowel-consonant words and have some early sight word recognition skills.

The curriculum focuses on word families and a further study of blends and digraphs. Continuing on with what was learned in level 5 of Blending Buckaroos, we introduce more in depth skills like synonyms, antonyms, homophones and compound words.  We also introduce nouns and verbs.

Here at Learning Trek we have developed our own unique reading initiative program to supplement and assist Kindergarten age school children in their reading efforts.  It is designed to cultivate and enrich the literacy skills your child is already learning in school.

Our curriculum is three-fold, each focusing on building your child's skills in key Language Art content areas such as
Phonemic Awareness,
Reading Comprehension,
 and Emergent Writing.

Literacy encompasses more than just reading the words on a page.
It also requires that children have the ability to understand what is read, and the skill to write meaningful responses.
That is why we offer a curriculum that is designed to enrich your child's phonemic awareness, reading comprehension, and emergent writing skills.

All instruction is geared to enrich and expand upon the reading skills that your child is learning in their school setting.  Through the use of authentic literature and a comprehensive phonics, reading comprehension, and writing program, Kindergarten Enrichment will assist your child in the acquisition and reinforcement of critical early literacy skills.

"Research has shown that phonemic awareness is one of the most potent predictors of success in  learning to read. It’s more highly related to early reading than tests of general intelligence, reading readiness, and listening comprehension.?   (Stanovich & Siegle, 1994; Stanovich, 1986)
